Submit Your Question(s) to Bob Herz
    body:

The Monday morning plenary speaker at the AAA Meetings in Denver is Robert Herz, the former Chair of the Financial Accounting Standards Board.  Mr. Herz has agreed to an interview/conversation format where he will address questions submitted by the membership of the American Accounting Association.  This is a great opportunity for all of us to hear from somebody who has had a unique perspective in observing the evolution of financial reporting in today’s economic environment.

We invite everyone to submit a question to Bob Herz by Monday, August 1.  The topics can be broad or specific and can pertain to any issue related to financial reporting.  Examples might include, the accounting standard setting process, convergence with IFRS, the challenges of regulating financial reporting in today’s economic environment, or implications of recently released updates to accounting standards.

    Bob Herz

    Going Green and the AAA3

    Going Green and the AAA
    body:

Many accountants are helping organizations change business practices and performance metrics so that they conserve and protect our natural resources. This GO GREEN sustainability focus has already appeared in many of our academic programs. With all of the discussion regarding this issue, the question to consider is what the AAA could do to make our practices more environmentally friendly.  It seems to me that the first process we might consider are the practices the AAA uses in organizing and running our annual meeting.  I invite your suggestions on how we can make the practices we use for the AAA Annual Meeting this August in Denver more green friendly.   Recognize that all suggestions cannot be implemented immediately, but any suggestion is worth considering and we should try to implement those that we can.

    It Is Time To Vote
    body:

One benefit of membership in the AAA is a say in how the association operates.  Changes to the AAA By-Laws have been developed and discussed for a good while.  These proposed changes are available on the AAA Commons along with a sample ballot and a list of FAQs.  Now it is time to vote.   Please let your voice be heard and take a few minutes to vote on each of the three proposals.  All voting members have received a communication with an email link to the ballot (those without email addresses or requesting a hard copy ballot will receive this information by mail).  For security/verification purposes, electronic voting must be done by clicking the link in the email received by members eligible to vote.  Please let your voice be heard and take a few minutes to vote on each of the three proposals. Contact Kurt Gardner at Kurt@aaahq.org if you have any questions.

For years I have written the address 5717 Bessie Drive, Sarasota Florida - the headquarters of the AAA .  I always assumed that it this is a big, beautiful building.  I also wondered what all the staff really did there, besides enjoy the Florida weather. The past few days I have spent time at 5717 Bessie Drive with the staff answering questions and providing input on issues they are working on.  From this experience, I have several observations.

    • Headquartes consists of two rather small buildings located about 100 yrds apart at the end of a one-lane road - Bessie Drive.  One building has recently been renovated while the other I describe as "unique.'  Both are comfortable and functional.
    • We have great individuals working on staff - although, surprisingly, only 23 to support our 8,300 members.  They are focussed on serving the members and working to streamline processes. Many of our discussions centered on how they could be more helpful, what can they do to improve their work, what do the members want and other similar issues.
    • Recently the staff reorganized into functional teams: membership, publications, finance, web communications and administration.  I met with each team and found them working hard to identify what they can do to improve their function in relationship to the services offered to the membership.
    • And, the weather in Florida is beautful!

    AAA BYLAWS - proposal for a revision1

AAA BYLAWS - proposal for a revision
    body:

The AAA Bylaws have not been significantly changed for the past 30 years. The most significant governance change was the creation of Council in 1981 when only six Sections and seven Regions existed (currently there are 23 Sections and Regions). Approximately one year ago, I was asked to head up a task force to review our bylaws and bring them more in line with current demands of our organization. The task force is populated with association members who have significant governance experiences. Task force members have been presidents of sections and/or regions, served on Council, and served on numerous AAA Committees (several volunteered for this task force).

The major objectives of the bylaws revision is to engage more members in governance through Council actvities and to add flexibility to the Executive Committee. In addition other changes are being proposed through out the bylaws. We are interested in your input regarding these changes. Please click below to access the bylaws discussion page to provide your input.

Kazuo Hiramatsu, Vice President- International of the American Accounting Association and President of the Japan Accounting Association invited me to Japan this summer to speak to accounting students and faculty in Tokyo and Osaka.  Pictured above are a group of faculty and students with whom I met on the Tokyo campus of Kwansei Gaikun University.  I was able to tell them about many of the things I have learned this year at various section and regional AAA meetings, and share advice I picked up for them at the Doctoral Consortium.  Of course I learned as much from those attending as they might have from me.

After a few days in Tokyo, I moved to Osaka and spoke to a group of about 400 accounting students at Kwansei Gaikun University’s main campus.  On another day, I had the opportunity to speak to and met with members of the Business Analysis Association of Japan.  We discussed accounting issues that are of concern to all of us, regardless of country.  The implications for us of the economic recession, adoption of IFRS, fair value accounting, corporate governance, among other topics.

About 25% of AAA’s membership are international, and we have long had a large number of members from Japan and other Asian countries.  This trip provided me with an opportunity to meet with some of these members and to share with them AAA’s strategic plan and activities.  At the same time I was in Japan, AAA President-elect Kevin Stocks was visiting China, attending a meeting of the Chinese Accounting Society.  Both of us no doubt learned as much or more from the accounting students and scholars we met in our travels and we appreciated the opportunity to meet with some of our international membership.

    2010 AAA/Deloitte Doctoral Consortium

As has been the case for many years, the 2010 Doctoral Consortium was held at Granlibakken Resort in Lake Tahoe.  This year’s program was organized by Jim Hunton (Bentley University), with assistance from his committee and about twelve accounting scholars who shared their knowledge with the 96 student attendees.  This Consortium is a career highlight for many and certainly will be one of my most memorable experiences in a year filled with activities and events as AAA President.  The program emphasized that accounting research can be interdisciplinary and each faculty speaker noted the many intersections of their work with other accounting disciplines, such as Elaine Mauldin’s (University of Missouri) recount of the literature in information systems incorporating auditing, managerial, financial, and so on or Bob Yetman’s (UC Davis) note that much of our scholarship on profits can address also not-for-profit and governmental research questions.  As might be expected, there were lively debates on fair value and IFRS, along with publishing and career advice and use of “Libby boxes.”  Students asked questions and the faculty answered them enthusiastically, eager to help the next generation be successful members of the accounting academy.

Of course we had fun, too.  Pictured above are Ray Pfeiffer (Texas Christian University) on piano and Rob Bloomfield (Cornell University) as lounge singer.  What a great show they put on!  Students showed off their singing and dancing talents on our last night at Consortium Idol.  (Simon was just mean!)

Many thanks to all who made this year’s consortium such a success, including David Boynton and Dee Strahan from AAA, Janet Butchko from Deloitte, and Jim Hunton and his committee.

    Ohio!

Last week I attended my last regional meeting as AAA President.  It was in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio and it was great to be back.  The meeting was very successful, with strong attendance numbers and many program offerings.  Rob Larson and Jan Eighme did a great job in putting the meeting and program together.

This past year the Conference on Teaching and Learning (CTLA) has had sessions at several of the regional meetings.  This picture shows Bob Allen (Vice-Chairperson Academic - Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum section) leading a session in the Ohio CTLA about reinvigorating your passion for teaching.  The room was full and all in attendance were able to take away ideas that will help to be better educators.  Another meeting feature was a presentation by Clarke Price from the Ohio Society of CPA's.  Clarke's presentation was a great update on issues facing practice.  As always, I am struck by how much benefit our AAA meetings have for researchers and educators alike.

The AAA Spring Council meeting is always special but particularly so when it's held in Sarasota as happens every other year. It provides the volunteers and headquarters staff to put faces to email addresses and meeting each other impresses both groups. This year’s meeting had a big agenda - choosing a journal editor, getting council input on potential governance changes, sharing information on branding and other strategic initiatives, and saying farewell to someone who has been an important part of AAA for seventeen years.

Roland LaTulip has decided to retire.  Many of you may know Roland as an address - the recipient of the mailing of expense reports or perhaps checks. But in reality Roland has been that steady hand that has guided our organization through many years of financial highs and lows.  Being an accountant in an accounting organization has its unique challenges but Roland has always handled the job with expertise and aplomb.  We’ll miss him.  Fortunately, Diane Leger, who has worked with Roland for several years, is well-prepared to step in as the new Director of Finance and Administration for AAA.  Fortunately also, Roland won’t disappear completely as he will be handling database projects on a part time basis.

The 2010 New Faculty Consortium made history!  About 130 faculty met at the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, VA last weekend at the annual consortium sponsored by Ernst & Young and the American Accounting Association.  As the "blizzard of the century" raged outside, the faculty inside spent a day preparing for careers as teachers and another learning how to be successful in research.  The faculty were able to concentrate on the program thanks to Ellen Glazerman, Sylvia Ulrich, and Lannie Wendorf from Ernst & Young.  These professionals rescheduled flights, made extended stay arrangements, ensured plenty of food and beverage, and did everything short of shoveling out cars. Thanks also go to Naomi Soderstrom and her committee for doing an outstanding job in putting theprogram together.
